Weather update for Wednesday and into the Thanksgiving Weekend 2015

11/25/2015

The Thanksgiving week storm continues its slow march towards the east.  Snow in the northwestern third of the country will continue and an ice storm is shaping up for North Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa for Thursday evening through Friday.  In addition to potentially treacherous driving conditions, temperatures are expected to drop into the teens in the northern tier of the country as the storm moves east.  As drivers may be delayed by weather it’s important to be prepared if they have to park for extended periods of time with warm clothing, water and food to weather the storm.
  •          At this time California has chains required over Donner Pass on I 80 at the Nevada border
  •          Oregon has chains required over Cabbage Pass on I 84 in northeastern Oregon and travel in the eastern portion of the state is expected to be difficult through 1500 today.
  •          Idaho is seeing snow in the southern half of the state with slush building on the interstates.
  •          Nevada is seeing snow in the northern part of the state  Interstate 80 between Wells and Wendover has chains required and conditions are described as adverse along much of the highway.
  •          Four to seven inches of snow is expected to start falling in Utah later this afternoon and into Thursday morning.  Chains could be needed between Salt Lake and the Wyoming border later today.
  •          Montana has snow, blowing snow and very slow travel in much of the state.  Winter storm warnings are in place for much of I-90 and I-94 through this morning, and road conditions may not improve much until tomorrow.
  •          Wyoming has blizzard warnings in place for most of the state from early this afternoon through 1700 Thursday.  Only five to six inches of snow is forecast, but winds gusting to near 50 MPH will likely severely hamper travel in most of Wyoming during that time.  Be prepared for road closures to take effect tonight and early Thursday.
